Coach Program

Project Morry’s Coach Program matches high school students with volunteer coaches that connect regularly over the two-year one-on-one mentoring program. Having a Project Morry coach provides a motivated young adult with an adult role model who can give them the extra support, encouragement and motivation that they need to fulfill their goals and graduate high school. The mentoring program provides a safe environment for young people to share their hopes and dreams, and seek advice on addressing the challenges they may be experiencing. On the other hand, coaches have a great sense of satisfaction knowing they are contributing. Along the way, coaches and students share a great deal of fun and laughter and develop a positive bond.

The Importance of Mentoring

The choices and goals set in high school can be a turning point in a young person’s life on a path to becoming a productive and self-confident adult. One-on-one mentoring exposes students to new experiences and an adult perspective on life to help them make choices that will keep them safe, happy and healthy.

What Is the Coach’s Role?

Coaches work closely with their students to support a strong sense of inner-motivation, build self-confidence, and mentor them to develop the skills necessary to set and successfully move towards their goals. They connect monthly with students to help them prepare for life after high schools, for example to review PSAT and SAT preparation, college applications, scholarship and financial aid applications, and to discuss how to fill out job applications.

Support for Coaches

Project Morry coaches benefit from a formal training program, ongoing support and access to helpful resources. A “contract” is signed by the coach and student to ensure that both individuals agree to the conditions of the program. Systems are in place to monitor and review the mentoring to ensure a successful relationship. Staff members provide volunteer coaches with professional guidance and act as a safety net to support coaches based on their knowledge of the needs of young people at this critical stage in their adolescent development.

Who Can Be a Coach?

Project Morry coaches are adults who understand and are committed to Project Morry’s mission and upholding our values. Our coaches are passionate about assisting young adults to successfully navigate through the demanding task of finishing high school while preparing for their post-graduation experiences. The relationship between coaches and young people is based on consistency, positive reinforcement, accountability, commitment, respect and caring.

“My coach was there through my Senior year of high school when I needed an outsider to help me understand my emotions and he has been there to help me organize and prioritize and to remind me to not do too many things at once. I know that he is one I can trust and depend on with my emotions, visions, and stressors.”
