Update on Summer 2020
Dear Project Morry Community:
In the past two months, our world has changed.
What has not changed is the Project Morry mission: our purpose, our reason, our why.
In the past two months, we have created and modeled a variety of camp scenarios for Summer 2020. We are now down to one. We have made the decision that our sleepaway camp, Morry’s Camp, will not open for the 2020 summer season. This was an incredibly difficult decision, especially in our 25th year. However, based on the needs of our children and families, it is clear this is the right decision for Project Morry. Every decision we make starts with our commitment to them and how we can continue to keep doing what we are doing.
Project Morry was started 25 years ago with the mission of bringing the transformative impact of summer camp to children from under-resourced communities. In 2020, our purpose hasn’t changed: To empower youth to create positive futures and long-term change for their lives and communities.
We are planning a summer full of programming and activities for our youth at all grade levels. Much like our in-person camp programming, it will build our students’ socio-emotional learning, their critical thinking, as well as their skills for communication and collaboration. It will be designed to engage, to connect, to create, and to bring JOY to our young people over their summer months. We will continue to update you as our plans are finalized and look forward to sharing some of the amazing work that we know will result.
In the past two months, we have learned much and have a great deal to be appreciative of. We are surrounded by a truly remarkable community. Kids, families and alumni who are trusting, funny, hungry to be a part and present; a staff that is passionate, committed, and talented; a board of directors who are insightful and engaged; and volunteers and donors who believe in the importance of what we do and are helping us continue to do it.
A colleague of mine, gave me and others a really beautiful gift of words recently that I will share with you. It truly says it all in this time of distance:
“You cannot cancel a community.”
We are not and we will not. We thank you all for your continued support and belief. Stay safe and be well and take care of you.
